The seriously injured man is fighting for his life in the Innsbruck clinic after an emergency operation on Tuesday evening. His seriously injured 19-year-old daughter is also being treated there. According to the Austrian police, his son (20) and his brother (46) were in the Zams hospital.
The cause of the gondola crash is initially still unclear. A total of six people were injured. A couple (58 and 62 years old) from Germany were also injured. The investigation is proceeding swiftly.
“We were able to interview the 49-year-old’s 20-year-old son,” the newspaper quotes Krone Hubert Juen, district commander of the police in Imst. However, the 20-year-old is in shock and cannot remember anything at the moment. The 46-year-old uncle was therefore unable to provide any information about the cause of the accident. “They don’t know how it happened,” Juen said.

A family from Denmark was seriously injured: a father with his 19-year-old son, his 17-year-old daughter and the children’s uncle. The two skiers are 49 and 46 years old. The Austrian police said they all fell about ten to twelve meters into impassable terrain while riding up the mountain in the 8-seater gondola cabin. One of the seriously injured people is said to be in critical condition.
Two Germans (58 and 62 years old) were injured in another gondola. The two holidaymakers were in the gondola that was going uphill. Nothing is initially known about the severity of her injuries.
According to current knowledge, a tree caused the serious accident in the Hochoetz ski area. According to the police, the tree fell on the gondola support cable, causing the 8-person gondola cabin to collapse.

The almost three kilometer long Acherkogelbahn transports winter sports enthusiasts from the valley to around 2000 meters above sea level. Given the good weather, the cable car was at full capacity when the accident happened, according to the cable car spokesman.

So it’s probably a family,” says deputy district police commander Michael Haid to ORF. The police don’t know where the family comes from. Gondola crashed in Tyrol – four seriously injured
A tree is said to have fallen on the support cable, reports the Austrian newspaper Krone. The gondola with four occupants then fell between supports eight and nine.
A major operation is underway. Helicopters and mountain rescue teams are at the scene of the accident, along with other rescue workers and the police. According to the mountain railways, the terrain there is very impassable and difficult to reach. The injured had to be rescued from the helicopter with a rope, they said Tiroler Tageszeitung. There is currently no information available about the identity of the injured.

Michaela Burger from Bergbahnen Hochoetz speaks on ORF of a “dramatic accident”. Several trees fell into the cable car route. It is highly unlikely that a gondola will crash, even if a tree falls into the cable car route. “Experts have to clarify how this could have happened,” says Burger. It is also unclear why the trees fell over in the first place. There was no strong wind.

Due to the cold, there wasn’t much activity in the ski area. The affected train was stopped immediately. The skiers who were not directly affected were informed via loudspeakers and some were taken by bus to another part of the ski area.
It was only in December that an accident in the Ratschings ski area sparked discussions. A tree also fell on the cable car there, but the reason was probably the wind.
