Golf pro Sepp Straka managed to win his second PGA tournament in Silvis with a formidable final round of 62 shots. The Viennese shone on Sunday in Illinois on the par 71 course with nine birdies and an eagle before he missed a possible fabulous round with a double bogey on the last hole. The win, which was rewarded with $1.3 million, went out anyway, Straka triumphed with 21 under par, two shots ahead of the US duo Brendon Todd and Alex Smalley.
“It’s pretty crazy. I’m thrilled to be here as the winner,” said Straka. The 30-year-old, who has lived in the USA since he was young, had his first tournament success last year in Palm Beach Gardens. In Florida he had achieved the first victory of an Austrian on the world’s top-class tour.
Straka started very badly with a 73 in the John Deere Classic, which did not have many stars. From 133rd place, however, he showed a sensational race to catch up with laps of 63, 65 and the final, which was record-breaking until just before the end.
He missed an even better final round, such as a possible 59, on the 18th hole with a tee shot into the water and a missed putt. “Unfortunately that wasn’t a good shot, my only bad one. But my putter was hot today,” said the Viennese following another personal best and added. “The 59 was not in my head, I was just thinking regarding winning the tournament.” Starting from 14th place, he felt a little trembling while waiting for Todd and Co. to follow behind him.
