The Golden Lion of the Venice Film Festival goes to the film “Poor Things” by Greek director Giorgos Lanthimos. The jury announced this on Saturday evening. “Poor Things” is an experimental variation on the Frankenstein story starring US actress Emma Stone. Other roles are occupied by Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo – and the German actress Hanna Schygulla can also be seen briefly.
The 50-year-old director Lanthimos is known for films such as “The Favorite – Intrigue and Madness”, “The Lobster” and “The Killing of a Sacred Deer”.

Cailee Spaeny and Peter Sarsgaard honored as best actors
Other important prizes at the film festival went to the American Cailee Spaeny for her role in “Priscilla” (best actress), the American Peter Sarsgaard for his part in “Memory” (best actor) and the Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, who received the Grand Jury Prize for his film “Evil Does Not Exist” (Japanese: “Aku wa sonzai shinai”).

The 25-year-old Cailee Spaeny plays the eponymous main character, the temporary wife of Elvis Presley, in “Priscilla” (director: Sofia Coppola). The drama is told from the perspective of Priscilla, who met Elvis in Germany at the age of 14 and moved to Memphis with him at the age of 17.
52-year-old Peter Sarsgaard plays the male lead in “Memory,” a drama by Michel Franco. He embodies a man with dementia. “Memory” is a drama regarding love and memory.

At a press conference in Venice, Sarsgaard explained that the film particularly touched him because of a personal connection: his uncle, to whom he was very close, had developed dementia at a comparatively early age, like his character in the film.
Special prize for refugee drama
The Polish director Agnieszka Holland received the Special Jury Prize for her film “ Zielona Granica “. The drama tells of migrants on the Polish-Belarusian border. The film is largely set in 2021, when the situation at the Polish-Belarusian border escalated: thousands of people tried to enter the EU illegally.
The film made a big splash in her home country. The far-right Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro made derogatory comments regarding the work on the social media platform X
Silver Lion goes to Matteo Garrone
Italian director Matteo Garrone won the Silver Lion for Best Director. The 54-year-old received the award for his drama “Io capitano”. The film tells the story of two young men from Senegal in West Africa who want to escape to Italy and have horrific experiences on their journey
Director Ryusuke Hamaguchi wins Grand Prize
Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi has been awarded the Grand Jury Prize. The 44-year-old won the award for his film “Evil Does Not Exist” (Japanese: “Aku wa sonzai shinai”).
The quiet drama tells of the residents of a small Japanese village who live in harmony with nature. One day their village community is thrown out of balance. A company wants to build a glamorous camping resort in the village, which the residents rebel once morest. (SDA)
