Review by Christel Scheja

Only one volume separates “Golden Kamuy” from the grand finale, so things are getting heated again, because the parties who are greedy for the Ainu treasure have now gathered in one place and are fighting – although not just for the gold itself.

Sugimoto and Asirpa have retreated to Hakodate Fortress together with the partisans around Sofia Golden Hand. There they are trying to hold their position and protect the legacy of the Ainu by any means possible. The better-equipped 7th Division, led by Lieutenant Colonel Tsurumi, has opened the assault on the facility and is determined to get everyone out of the way – they are not above bombardment for this.

Meanwhile, the secret of the Ainu treasure and the role that Asirpa’s father played in the whole drama has been revealed. And it turns out that it is not just about gold, but about much more.

And that is exactly what is not in the interest of certain people. Moreover, the battle for Hakodate gives certain people a chance to settle scores from the past and take cruel revenge. This naturally puts Sugimoto’s own character to the test. However, through Asirpa, he has learned to preserve his humanity and knows what is important to him and, above all, why.

The fight is action-packed, but there are also quieter moments in which it becomes clear what motivation the most important representatives of each group have brought to this point. And for most of them, it is not necessarily greed for gold.

This gives the series a little more depth and also awakens interest in Japanese history, which is repeatedly alluded to here.

“Golden Kamuy” offers a lot of action and a nasty cliffhanger just before the finale, but also allows an interesting look at the various people and the real treasure that is actually at stake. It will be really exciting to see how it all ends.
