Golden Globes: Denis Villeneuve shunned

The hundred or so journalists from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HPFA) crowned “The Power of the Dog” and ignored Denis Villeneuve on Sunday evening at a Golden Globe ceremony held behind closed doors at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.

Nominated in three categories, Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” won only the award for best soundtrack for the compositions of Hans Zimmer, the Quebec filmmaker not having been awarded in the categories for best director – who has was awarded to Jane Campion for “The Power of the Dog” – and Best Picture, awarded to “The Power of the Dog”.

No feature film has won the bet, only “West Side Story” by Steven Spielberg stood out by winning three statuettes, including that of the best film, comedy or musical. “Belfast”, the favorite with seven nominations, won one statuette, while “The Power of the Dog”, also cited seven times, took home three awards. Will Smith won the award for Best Actor in a Drama Film for “King Richard: Beyond the Game”, while Nicole Kidman was chosen as Best Actress in a Drama Film for “Being the Ricardos”.

Unsurprisingly, “Encanto: The Fantastic Madrigal Family” from Disney Studios walked away with the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature. And it is the Japanese film awarded at Cannes “Drive My Car” which was crowned best foreign film.

This year, the 79th Golden Globes were discreet because of multiple scandals. No stars, no more TV broadcasts, NBC boycotted the evening, and no web streaming. Only laconic sentences, both on the official website of the Golden Globes and on social networks announced the winners.

Under the guise of a pandemic, the HFPA tried to silence accusations of corruption, racism and sexism during an evening without fanfare that lasted 90 minutes. Among the awards, mentions of the HFPA’s charitable donations as well as its actions in the community, including a video of Jamie Lee Curtis.

The very first statuette of the evening went to Ariana DeBose, Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story”. Obviously aware of the accusations of racism, the organizers of the Golden Globes have been betting all evening on the themes of inclusion and diversity, insisting that these awards are inseparable from the history of Hollywood.

On the television side, the series “Succession”, strong of its five nominations, won three Golden Globes, including that of the best drama series and “Ted Lasso”, cited four times, obtained only one.
