“Westside Story” and “The Power of a Dog” topped the Golden Globe Awards Sunday, with a somber party that wasn’t shown on television.
The prominent cinematic event was significantly reduced this year, as it was held without the presence of celebrities, was not broadcast on any channel, not even via the Internet, and without the presence of the press or the crossing of the guests on the red carpet.
It follows accusations of corruption and a lack of diversity on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s awards jury.
The party, which is usually huge, was replaced by announcing the winners’ names through the “Golden Globes” website, and through its accounts on the communication sites.
Some actors participated by default, while most celebrities were absent from the participation, and some producers and company heads gave awards.
Who are the top winners?
Steven Spielberg’s Westside Story, a remake of the 1961 movie, won Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical, and stars Rachel Ziegler and Ariana Deboss won awards for the acting category.
The two actresses did not personally participate in the party, but thanked the award via their Twitter accounts, noting the controversy surrounding the jury.
“The Power of a Dog” was awarded the best drama film, and its director, Jane Campion, was awarded the best director award, and its hero Cody Smith McPhee was awarded the best actor in a supporting role.
Actress Michaela Jay Rodriguez set a historic precedent, becoming the first transgender woman to win the Best Actress award for her role in the Netflix series “Pose”.
Actress Kate Winslet won Best Actress in a Miniseries for her role in “Mary of Eastown,” while Andrew Garfield won Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for his role in “Tic Tic Boom.”
British actor Benedict Cumberbatch was among the nominees for Best Dramatic Actor for his role in “The Power of a Dog”, but the award went to American Will Smith for his role in “King Richard”.
In the film, Smith plays Richard Williams, the father of tennis champions Serena and Venus Williams. The work follows the father’s journey in training his two daughters to become one of the most prominent tennis players in the world.
Nicole Kidman won Best Actress in a Drama for her portrayal of TV icon Lucille Ball in Being an Al Ricardo.
The film stars Kidman and Spanish actor Javier Bardem, and this is the fifth Golden Globe in the career of the Australian actress.
The series “Caliphate” was SuccessionThe most prominent winners in the TV categories, winning three awards, including the best drama series.
The work tells the story of the struggle for influence in the Roy family, headed by the media octopus Logan Roy.
The series’ star Jeremy Strong won the award for Best Dramatic Actor in a Television Series, while his co-worker Sarah Snook won Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
“Squid Game” hero Oh Young-soo won Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
What is the fate of the award?
The Golden Globes party is a prelude to the Oscars, and every year millions of people watch it on television.
But a press investigation published by the Los Angeles Times showed that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which is the award’s awarding body, does not include any ethnic minorities in its membership.
This was reflected in Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards, which was previously described as “Hollywood’s favorite evening,” the first of the major film awards season.
Films that win Golden Globes, or even those that get nominations in their respective categories, usually score higher in ticket sales.
“Winning a gilded statue” is of unchanging importance, noting that these awards “have been for decades a way to measure success,” said Richard Lecata, television communication expert and president of Lecata & Company.
He believed that receiving a Golden Globe award was “always important to anyone seeking to win an Oscar or an Emmy” for television.
In the face of this uproar, the League hastened to adopt a series of reforms, including the inclusion of new members in it to diversify its composition and improve the representation of minorities in it.
