Emma Hinze raised her winning fist in the air, then fell into the arms of the other German super sprinters with a cheer. The Golden Girls got off to a dream start at the start of the Track Cycling World Championships in Glasgow and raced to their fourth consecutive title in the team sprint with a world record.
The successful trio consisting of Hinze, Lea Sophie Friedrich and Pauline Grabosch defeated the strong team from Great Britain (45.923 seconds) in the team sprint final on Thursday in a world record time of 45.848 seconds.
“It’s so cool to do it for the fourth time in a row. And then with a world record! Sometimes I can’t really believe it,” said Hinze. For Friedrich it was “madness what we put on the track.” Grabosch said: “We gave each other strength.”
After 2020, 2021 and 2022, Hinze, Friedrich and Grabosch will remain the measure of all things in 2023, one year before the Olympic Games in Paris they impressively underpinned their supremacy. The previous world record (45.967) was set by the Bund Deutscher Fahrrad (BDR) team last year in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France.
Hinze, Friedrich and Grabosch spoil Great Britain’s home game
In the well-attended Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, a relaxed atmosphere developed during the evening session. It culminated in the team sprint final, when the majority of the spectators loudly whipped the Brits forward. But Hinze, Friedrich and Grabosch had the right answer.
Hinze and Friedrich are also favorites in the other short-term disciplines. The now seven-time world champion Hinze and Friedrich with eight titles might approach the record mark of Kristina Vogel (eleven world titles) with further successes.
On Friday, the track competitions are once once more the focus. In the women’s time trial over 500 m, Hinze, as the European champion, has a personal right to start, whether she will exercise it will be decided at short notice. The men’s team sprint final with the German trio around Maximilian Dörnbach is also on the agenda.
