  • A real chain reaction broke out following an accident near Goldach on Saturday following midday.

  • The events were triggered by the self-accident of a 26-year-old.

  • In the end, eight cars were hit. Ten people were injured.

At 12.25 p.m., the cantonal emergency call center received a report of a traffic accident involving several cars, reports Kapo St. Gallen. Several patrols then went to the scene. The deployed police officers found a total of eight damaged vehicles on the road. According to initial findings, a 26-year-old woman was driving her car on the A1 motorway in the direction of Chur when the car crashed into the right-hand control barrier shortly following the Sulzberg rest area due to briefly precarious road conditions. As a result, the car of a 29-year-old woman driving behind the 26-year-old also collided with the demarcation.

A rear-end collision between two cars then occurred behind the two cars involved in the accident, in which the car of a 29-year-old driver crashed into that of a 34-year-old. A fourth accident occurred even further back, with four cars colliding with each other.

A total of ten people were injured in the four accidents, two of whom suffered unspecified injuries. The other eight people were slightly injured. A total of three injured people had to be taken to the hospital by the ambulance service, six others were uninjured. All eight cars involved suffered material damage totaling over 100,000 francs. They were removed from the scene by tow truck.

Due to the accident recording, the highway had to be closed for more than two hours. Traffic was diverted at the Meggenhuus motorway junction. As a result, there was a major backlog. In addition to several patrols from the St. Gallen canton police, around 30 members of the Goldach fire brigade and around 20 members of the rescue service, two emergency doctors and a patrol from the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security were on duty.
