The president of the 4S Center (Centre for Strategies for the Security of the Sahel Sahara), the former Mauritanian minister and former under-secretary general of the UN, Ahmed Ould Abdallah, is the guest of the fifth edition of Mon Heure d’Afrique (MHA). This issue is devoted to gold trafficking in the Sahel region which is an obstacle to its development and fuels terrorism by financing jihadists. It will be broadcast live Monday November 27 at 10:00 GMT on the TV channel of the Financial Afrik group then available, then, for broadcast by African television stations which request it.

This new edition of Mon Heure d’Afrique (MHA) highlights three Sahelian gold-producing countries: Mali, Burkina Faso and Mauritania. At Mali, which has become the second largest gold producer in Africa after Ghana, a new mining code has just been promulgated aimed at reducing exemptions and thus increasing state dividends. At Burkina Faso, the closure of five industrial gold mines and around forty artisanal gold panning sites invested by jihadists shows the extent of the security problem. In Mauritaniadespite the efforts of the authorities to try to regulate clandestine gold panning, gold fever continues with consequences on the environment and the lives of young men from all over the Sahel.

Advocating better control of their gold resources and more transparent regulation of this sector by States, Ahmed Ould Abdallah does not avoid any questions regarding the involvement in this trafficking of the various actors in the sector (States, multinationals, national companies, village communities, etc.) It also answers questions concerning the traceability of this gold which -ultimately- finances jihadism, as well as the main beneficiaries, -already identified in numerous studies-, such as Dubai (United Arab Emirates.)

In the role of experts are Emmanuel DupuyPresident of the Institute Foresight and Security in Europe (IPSE), who questions him on the why of the destabilization of the Sahelian States due to these diversions and how to remedy it. Jérémie Taieb, responsible for mission to AfricaRail’s donors, questions it on the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) and the establishment of new instruments to improve the traceability of gold produced in the Sahel, such as blockchain or the Kimberley process. Mirabell MayackHead of Government Affairs & Strategic Sales at African Investment Intelligence and founder of the African Investment Day Forum, the challenge on the privatization of security on mining sites and the reason why the Tuaregs were not included in the resolution of the conflict in the north of Mali – which has just been reinvested by the Malian army in the Kidal region.

Conceived and produced by the journalist Christine Holzbauer Gueye, the show Mon Heure d’Afrique (MHA) has defended – since its launch in 2021 – an independent African point of view through reports produced in Africa by partner African televisions. In its end section entitled “Honni or Béni”, MHA5 addresses the question of the French presence in the Sahel, not to judge it but to try to change it. “ We are no longer in the 70s and French leaders must understand that it is social networks that shape opinion today, in Africa, as elsewhere. Except that in our country, unemployment being higher, it is social networks that are important », hammered Ahmed Ould Abdallah throughout the show.

A specialist in West and Central Africa, this seasoned reporter traveled the continent as a correspondent for major French newspapers from Bamako (Mali) then Dakar (Senegal), where she lived for more than fifteen years. , before her return to France in 2016. In parallel with the show that she produces, directs and presents, she created an eponymous association intended to promote freedom of expression in Africa and in the African diasporas through audiovisual media.

The Mon Heure d’Afrique association organizes training for image reporter journalists (JRI) as well as seminars to help the editorial staff of national or local African channels, which contribute reports to the show, to fight against fake news . MHA also helps African television stations that do not yet have one to create a “True or False” section and broadcast it permanently on their channels.
