Gold jewelry: treasure or scrap?

Gold used to be considered the number one value. The products were family heirlooms: they were carefully stored in boxes and passed down from generation to generation. What is the situation now?

Compensation for damage from failed relationships

Many Chelny residents keep gold jewelry at home as a memory of the first salary they spent or, for example, a gift from their parents when they came of age.

“No matter what they say, I wear gold rings, earrings and chains every day, so I feel self-sufficient and wealthy,” said Zaria Sibgatova, a 45-year-old employee of a private company. “The love for jewelry comes from my parents, who invested money in gold and taught me that this is a deposit for a rainy day.”

Others in their youth were fond of expensive products, stood in line the day they arrived in stores, or overpaid, purchasing them second-hand at markets. As a result, years later, this gold product was sold as scrap to a jewelry store.

“Several years ago, my husband and I collected our gold items and donated them to a jewelry store,” said teacher Natalya Atolova. “Using the proceeds, we bought a tour to a five-star hotel in Turkey and had a great time. And for my colleague, a jeweler made an exclusive art piece from two wedding rings for home”.

Jewelers say that people bring gold left over from failed relationships to them to donate.

“Shuttle traders’ visits to me often begin with the words: “I never thought regarding it, but I urgently needed money,” Mikhail Goryachev revealed the nuances of his work. “They often hand over rings and say that they won’t wear them, they don’t want to keep them, and this will result in compensation for damage from unsuccessful “I take out the stones from jewelry with stones and return them to the owner, since such scrap is either melted down or bought by dentists. Diamonds and emeralds are mainly dealt with by specialists in Kazan.”

By the way, for 1 gram of gold in Chelny they now give: 375 standard – 1800 rubles (an increase of 300 rubles compared to last year); 585th sample – 2900 rubles (increase by 400 rubles); 750th – 3900 rubles; for dental crowns – 4200 rubles.

Gold is too overvalued

As Marat Samigullin, a jeweler from Kazan, explained, precious metals, along with assets and bonds, are one of the investment tools. They can be purchased in the form of bars and coins, in addition, you can open an impersonal metal account, on the balance of which you can buy assets. But there is no point in investing money in rings and earrings.

“Is gold still valuable today?” – we asked our expert, Honored Economist of the Russian Federation Evgeny Goldfain, with this question.

“It’s a very difficult question, because the concept of value, especially in gold, depends primarily on trust and on alternatives,” he said. “When there is some kind of currency that inspires trust, then gold changes its value downward. It is overvalued. If If it weren’t for the fashion for jewelry in India, China, Turkey, gold would not have reached such heights in value. And most importantly: the planet’s economy has reached such magnitudes that there is physically not enough gold to provide the equivalent of all payments, savings, and financial transactions. Many now are preparing for a possible crisis. And here, thousands of years of experience suggests that gold is necessary as an accumulation. But it is necessary to store values in dollars, rubles, euros, cryptocurrency and gold, that is, not put everything in one basket. Now for an ounce of gold they ask for regarding $2,000. And its price depends on very large players.”

In fashion – to know a sense of proportion

Olga Pudakova, a member of the Union of Designers of the Russian Federation, Honored Artist of the Republic of Tatarstan (St. Petersburg), spoke regarding the trends in modern fashion for women’s jewelry:

“According to the rules of etiquette, it was never allowed to wear gold to work – this jewelry was exclusively for going out. Emperor Nicholas I gave his daughters one pearl each on Angel Day, although he might also present a necklace. And in Soviet times, for example, some women cling everything in a row: massive rings, bracelets, earrings, chains.

In modern fashion, you can combine everything; the trend is eclecticism. Fashionable jewelry confidently outshines expensive jewelry, because only with its help can you create bright urban images. There is luxury and mass-produced jewelry, and many interesting original works that use wood, leather, plastic, glass, beads, and shells. In general, today it is readily worn by representatives of different social strata. The most important thing is to be able to tell yourself in time: “Stop!” That is, to know a sense of proportion.”
