The World Cup gold medals always come in pairs for Markus Salcher. In 2013 and 2017 and now also in 2023 in Espot he won the title in the Super-G and also in the downhill. On Wednesday in the downhill, the 31-year-old was unbeatable, just like in training two and a half hours before. In the standing men – although he had messed up the start – he was eight hundredths ahead of Robin Cuche (Sz) and 1.04 seconds ahead Alexis Guimond (Kan) through.
“Training as the key to victory”
Salcher’s first reaction: “I drew the right conclusions from the training session in the morning, that was the key to victory.” But Salcher still had to tremble. Because the Swiss Robin Cuche was 1.23 seconds ahead at the first split time, at the second time measurement still five hundredths – but in the final part the Carinthian was simply outstanding and got the win. The extensive medal collection of the 31-year-old now includes 14 World Cup and seven Paralympics medals. This is Salcher’s ninth world title.
Sports officer LH Peter Kaiser, state sports director Arno Arthofer and Klagenfurt sports officer Franz Petritz congratulated Salcher on his success in broadcasts.
The second Carinthian, Nico Pajantschitz, finished 13th in the downhill on Wednesday.
