It’s been long months that it’s been waiting, but here it is finally, the gameplay of the coveted God of War: Ragnarök. Yes, Kratos and Atreus, armed with axes, bows and arrows, are back to take us on a journey – for a few seconds – to Svartalfheim, the dwarf kingdom.

Towards a bigger and more impressive world

It is through GameInformer that we are entitled to the very first images of God of War : Ragnaroka more than expected title since it is simply the sequel to God of War from 2018; for those who are still unaware of it, it is a masterpiece which was unanimous or almost unanimous and which was entitled to a nice 20 out of 20 in our columns. And even if this opus offered to explore far and wide and across Midgard and its immense Lake of Nine, or Alfheim, Helheim, Jötunheim, Niflheim and Muspelheim, a total of three kingdoms (Asgard, Vanaheim and Svartalfheim) were inaccessible . With God of War: Ragnarok, this small error will obviously be erased. Eric Williams, the director of the game, has indeed affirmed that it will now be possible to visit the nine kingdoms, and to prove it to us, this very first gameplay reveals the first images of Svartalfheim, the dwarven kingdom.

Although short – less than two minutes – this extract is breathtaking. It offers players sumptuous panoramas that stretch as far as the eye can see and offer absolutely gigantic architectures which remind us that this new proposal is more on a human scale than the very first trilogy. Everything seems to crush our hero yet demigods and armed to the teeth. Moreover, in the microphone of GameInformer, James Riding, the level-designer director admitted to wanting to always offer more verticality to “evolve the gameplay”.

When we observe the short video available above, we also realize that Kratos has learned new techniques to overcome obstacles. For example, it will be possible to use his ax to freeze geysers that prevented him from passing. Jason Guisao, the GameInformer journalist, also specifies that this new kingdom while verticality will offer many puzzles, where it will once more be necessary to use the various tools made available to solve them. Of course, Atreus will once once more be able to help us, since he will be happy to handle devices that are normally out of reach.

We wanted to show the dwarves and what they do here. They use water to propel themselves and to move objects. Even in the various biomes, the dwarves can be seen creating huge environments. And then when Kratos arrives, we wonder how he manages to bend the environment to his will. Jon Hickenbottom, level-designer

To finish, we learn that it will be possible to visit Niðavellir, the dwarf metropolis, which will be populated by inhabitants. The goal for Santa Monica is to add life to contrast with the previous episode which offered a more solitary journey.

We felt a little lonely in the last game. So specifically with Svartalfheim, we’re trying to show a living world. There are things here besides Kratos and Atreus. James Riding, Level Designer Director

Ancient Kingdoms Revamped

To avoid repetition, also note that the kingdoms that we have already visited in the 2018 episode have been reworked. We then learn that the Lac des Neufs, which we might once travel by canoe, is now completely frozen, which will push our hero duo to find new means of transport to get around. For example, it will be possible to count on the help of Spedki and Svanna, two sled wolves who we hope will be endearing.

As a reminder, God of War : Ragnarok is expected for the end of the year, either for November 9 on PlayStation 5, but also PlayStation 4.
