Go back 60 years of video games with the new edition of Start! by Erwan Cario

A lot has happened since the release of the first edition of Start in 2011. Almost two generations of consoles later with the arrival of the PS4/One and PS5/Series, the work signed by the journalist from Libération and main host of the podcast “Silence, we play” returns in a new expanded edition still published by Editions de la Martinière.

The new edition

The great history of video games by journalist Erwan Cario from Libération Photo YL

Released on November 3, this new edition includes 83 additional pages, bringing the work to a total of 288 compared to the previous version which cost the same price.

Essentially the same format, namely 19×25 cm, it looks back on the great games which have marked each generation of machines from its infancy in 1958 to its current hegemony where it has never been so popular and present all around us.

Erwan Cario therefore takes advantage of this new release to discuss the notable titles of recent years such as Zelda Breath Of The Wild which made the heyday of the Nintendo Switch, or the Elden Ring which largely fueled the debates of the podcast that he has been hosting for over ten years and we listen to him every week!

Our feelings regarding the work!

Well aware of the history of the media since we have been immersed in it for more than 30 years, the work is nonetheless an example of compact and complete support on its history. Generally speaking, we don’t dwell on a title or a period for more than two pages, which makes it perfect for snack reading, terms that we have just invented.

Certainly, there are many chapters that are part of the author’s video game journey with whom we share some similarities. In the disorder, the slap linked to the discovery of Eric Chahi’s game Another World (which I already spoke to you regarding in the show), the arrival of machines like the Amiga 500, the Metal Gear Solid slap, or else once once more the great return of Rayman at the beginning of the 2010s. We also take advantage of the book to look back on certain significant eras such as the video game crash of 1983 and the arrival of the title ET on Atari 2600, both a symbol and the straw that broke the camel’s back in a market polluted by far too many bad games. ‘

And finally, the book ends with a listing of 350 games that you must have played in your life. Very curious to know, we took part in the test game and if the statement does not say that you must have finished them all or not, we can already tell you that we have played 173 of this famous list!

Video game culture being a source of immense wealth, we still missed the Souls series, Fumito Ueda’s games, or even the Splinter Cell saga. So, we rushed to read what Erwan Cario thought regarding it so that it would whet our appetites and move certain titles up to the top of our “to do list” a bit.
