LG Display has unveiled customers who are currently working on vehicle OLED projects, such as General Motors (GM), Volvo, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Porsche, and Lucid. LG Display predicted that it would occupy 62% of the vehicle OLED market this year and more than 60% in 2026. LG Display announced that it would occupy more than 40% of the automotive LTPS LCD market in 2026, and occupy more than 50% of the premium vehicle display market that combines OLED and LTPS LCD in the same year.

Kim Byung-gu, executive director of LG Display’s auto business group, said at the keynote speech at the opening ceremony of IMID 2023 held at BEXCO in Haeundae, Busan on the 23rd, “We will continue to be number one in the premium vehicle display market.” IMID is an annual event of the Korea Information Display Society (KIDS).

Executive Vice President Kim Byeong-gu disclosed additional customers who are currently working on an organic light emitting diode (OLED) project for vehicles as announced by Sohn Ki-hwan, executive director of auto marketing last week. At the K-Display Business Forum held last week, Managing Director Son Ki-hwan said, “In addition to the three finished car brands, including Mercedes and Cadillac, which are mass-producing and supplying vehicle tandem OLEDs, and Genesis, which will supply second-generation OLEDs at the end of this year, the remaining six companies will be disclosed at IMID.” It has been said

Additional automotive OLED customers that executive director Kim Byeong-gu revealed on the day include GM, Volvo, JLR, Porsche, and Lucid. LG Display’s second-generation tandem OLED will be applied to these vehicles in 2024 or 2025 at the latest. “This year, we are mass-producing the second-generation tandem OELD with 30% and 40% improvement in brightness (brightness) and power consumption compared to the previous generation,” said Kim. We are also developing an improved 3rd generation tandem OLED.”

Automotive OLEDs that LG Display is working on with these finished car makers include plastic (P)-OLEDs using existing polyimide (PI) substrates as well as hybrid OLEDs (ATO: Advanced Thin OLEDs) that use glass substrates to lower prices. included

LG Display unveiled the finished vehicle market that premium vehicle displays such as P-OLED, hybrid OLED, and low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) type liquid crystal display (LCD) are targeting. Executive Director Kim Byung-koo announced that he would target luxury flagship vehicles over $80,000 with P-OLED, premium vehicles with $50,000 to $80,000 with hybrid OLED, and entry-level vehicles with $30,000 to $50,000 with LTPS LCD.

“P-OLED is a light and bendable product that uses a flexible PI substrate to achieve high definition,” said Byeong-gu Kim, managing director. “We plan to target the luxury flagship vehicle market that wants a unique design.” Hybrid OLED is a low-priced model using a glass substrate. It is a new product developed by LG Display for the purpose of popularizing vehicle OLED. The industry estimates that hybrid OLEDs for vehicles will go into mass production for the first time in 2025.

Executive Director Kim expected that “P-OLED will lead hybrid OLED in vehicle OLED sales in 2026.” LTPS LCD is a product that is more advantageous for realizing larger size and higher resolution than low-end amorphous silicon (a-Si) LCDs that have technical limitations. As such, LG Display announced that it would become a total solution provider in the vehicle display market through P-OLED, hybrid OLED, and LTPS LCD.

Managing Director Kim Byeong-gu predicted that “LG Display will account for 62% of the vehicle OLED market in terms of sales this year and exceed 60% in 2026.” The forecast for 2026 reflects the volume secured through current orders. In addition, he also introduced the expectation that “the LTPS LCD market for vehicles will occupy 48% of sales in terms of sales this year and more than 40% in 2026.”

“Vehicle OLED is growing at an average annual rate of 28% and LTPS LCD is growing at an average annual rate of 13%,” said Kim. “The vehicle display market is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 10% until 2030,” he added.

Byung-gu Kim, executive director of LG Display’s Auto Business Group, announced that by 2026, LG Display will occupy more than 50% of sales in the global premium vehicle display market through a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of IMID 2023 held at BEXCO in Haeundae, Busan.
