GLOBAL 2000 demands: Austria must now campaign for a majority “no” in the Council
Brussels/Vienna (OTS) – Today, EU member states were unable to reach a qualified majority to renew the approval of glyphosate. GLOBAL 2000 and the European pesticide network PAN Europe welcome this result.
“It is a vote of no confidence in the EU approval authorities EFSA and ECHA that the member states have not agreed to the approval of glyphosate today,” says Helmut Burtscher-Schaden, biochemist at GLOBAL 2000. “Unfortunately, the mistrust is justified. The authorities have given glyphosate carte blanche, even though independent studies – and in some cases the manufacturer’s studies – clearly show that glyphosate does not meet the legal requirements for approval. The applicants are also suspected of having withheld unfavorable studies and data.”
In the coming weeks, the member states will be invited once more to vote on the EU Commission’s proposal for re-authorization. The Commission is expected to adapt the proposal. If a qualified majority is not reached once more, the decision rests solely with the Commission.
On October 25th will be at the international scientific conference Environment, work and health in the 21st century in Bologna new research results from the multi-institutional Global Glyphosate-Study presented. The data presented there comes from the most comprehensive independent toxicology study ever conducted on glyphosate and glyphosate-containing herbicides.
“We hope that policymakers will take the results of this independent research into account when making decisions that have serious consequences for the health of Europeans and the environment,” concludes Burtscher-Schaden.
