Taking all factors together and assuming the worst-case scenario, which involves an immediate halt to the supply of gas from Russia, a wholesale megawatt hour (MWh) of electricity might cost up to €500 in 2023. In 2019, the price was still 38 euros. By 2030, the price might drop to 98 euros and by 2040 to 80 euros/MWh.
Taking into account more favorable factors, the price of electricity would be around 104 euros in the coming year and would fall to around 57 euros by 2040. Consumers will therefore have to say goodbye to the low electricity prices they are used to in the long term. Prognos also assumes that electricity prices will be subject to greater fluctuations in the future.
