Globalstar indicates expansion of the connection of iPhones with satellites

Apparently, the Apple it’s at Globalstar are working on new features to expand capabilities involving the iPhone satellite connectivity.

One record filed with the Federal Communications Commission (Federal Communications CommissionFCC), filed by Globalstar and released by PCMagit is a response to a T-Mobile’s previous record which stated that current devices do not support the reception of satellite signals with MSS mobile communication technology (Mobile Satellite Service).

The American telephone company proposes to provide coverage using the SCS standard (Supplemental Coverage from Space) in partnership with SpaceX — which, theoretically, would be more attractive (as it is already a standard supported by current smartphones).

According to Globalstar, however, current devices not only support the MSS standard, but already have it fully operational with services such as Emergency SOS via satellite, launched by Apple for iPhones last year.

So far, however, the feature is limited to sending emergency and user location messages, but the document notes that “Globalstar’s MSS system will continue to evolve over time to support a growing variety of features and direct services.”

Eventually, hundreds of millions of people around the world will have Globalstar connectivity at their fingertips in situations where communication is essential and no terrestrial network is available.

As Globalstar’s registration was a direct response to T-Mobile, it is conceivable that the company may evolve its system to support direct internet connection and satellite links in the future.
