– 2022 was the hottest year in many Swiss locations
The year has been the sunniest since the first measurements, SRF Meteo said on Sunday. October temperatures hit an all-time high.
The year 2022 has been in many places in Switzerland the hottest and sunniest since the start of measurements, according to SRF Meteo. It is also one of the driest, which has caused fires, especially in Ticino.
In some cases, the old temperature records, dating mostly from 2018 or 2020, have been exceeded by two tenths of a degree, the institute said on Sunday evening. South of the Alps, the mercury even sometimes exceeded the record values by half a degree.
Compared to the “climatological reference” of the years 1961 to 1990, the temperatures of 2022 exceed the norm by almost 3 degrees, both in the north and in the south, indicates SRF Meteo. The rise is 1.5 degrees compared to the current standard for the years 1991 to 2020.
May and June
Only the high mountain regions, the central and eastern Prealps as well as the Valais did not break the records. At the Jungfraujoch, for example, the year 2020 was significantly warmer. In Sion, the mercury showed even higher temperatures in 2018.
The months of May and June were the second hottest since the beginning of measurements in the middle of the 19th century, specifies SRF Meteo. July ranked fourth, following 1983, 2006 and 2015, and August third, following 2003 and 1992. September fell slightly below the 1991 to 2020 average, while October reached an all-time high.
