Global semiconductor market declined 11.1% in 2023; Apple, -5.8%

The research firm Gartner released today its data on the performance of the semiconductor market in 2023which closed the year with revenue 11,1% smaller compared to 2022, totaling US$533 billion.

Musical chairs, according to information, was big last year. A Intelfor example, returned to leadership in the sector, although it closed 2023 with revenue 16.7% lower (US$48.6 billion) in a year-to-year comparison. This exchange ended a two-year reign of Samsungwhich suffered a drop in sensitive 37,5%totaling just under US$40 billion not last period.

Another highlight of 2023 was the NVIDIAwhich appeared for the first time in its history in Top 5 from Gartner. The company’s strong investment in the area of generative artificial intelligence made the graphics card manufacturer jump from 12th position, in 2022, to 5th, in 2023, with a revenue of almost US$24 billion — significant growth 56,4% in a year-to-year comparison.

NVIDIA, in fact, was one of the 9 companies (out of 25) that managed to register some growth in 2023, along with names like Broadcom (+7.2%/US$25.5 billion) e STMicroelectronics. The latter, in fact, was also one of the highlights of last year, having recorded revenue of around US$17 billion (+7,7%).

A Apple, in turn, had less eye-catching numbers. In ninth place, the Cupertino giant had basically the same revenue as STMicroelectronics, although it fell 5,8% in relation to 2022. The market share captured by Maçã was also the same as its rival: 3,2%.

According to Gartner analyst and vice-president Joe Unsworth, this drop in the sector has a lot to do with the difficult year faced by the memory market, which recorded, in 2023, one of the biggest drops in its history: 37%.

Smartphones, PCs and servers, three of the largest DRAM and NAND segments, have faced weaker-than-expected demand and excess inventory, especially in the first half of 2023.
