Global PC Market Decline Eases, Shipments Fall 12% in Q2 2023

A new report from Canalys proves that the major decline in PC shipments and distribution around the world is finally coming to a halt, as things are starting to stabilize. The situation is not yet on the rise, but the fact that the dramatic decline is not as intense at the moment means that there is hope for a better future. This news follows the release of figures for the second quarter of this year, where desktop and laptop shipments fell steadily year-on-year to 62 million.
The latest data from Canalys reveals that the decline in the global PC market slowed in the second quarter of 2023, with total shipments of desktops and laptops down 11.5% from the previous year. , reaching 62.1 million units. This decline follows two consecutive quarters in which deliveries fell by more than 30%. The second quarter volume represents a sequential increase in shipments of 11.9% and is a sign that the market is on track for an accelerated recovery in the second half of this year. Laptop shipments fell 9.3% year-on-year to 49.4 million units, while desktops saw a larger drop of 19.3% to 12.6 million units.

The PC market is showing the first signs of a rebound following a difficult period. A yearly decline in shipments was expected in the second quarter of 2023, but it looks like many of the issues that have plagued the industry are starting to ease. While the global macroeconomic situation remains challenging, major industry players have highlighted the fact that end-user activation rates have kept pace faster than shipments of sold products. As conditions improve, we expect companies to reallocate dormant spending from IT upgrades. In the second quarter of 2023, the return of public sector funding helped fuel strong back-to-school PC demand, said Ishan Dutt, principal analyst at Canalys.

Positive market signals suggest further improvement for the PC industry in 2023. Inventory levels fell further in the second quarter, as 41% of channel partners surveyed by Canalys in June said they had less than a week PC inventory. All customer segments are expected to improve sequentially for the remainder of 2023, amid a final spurt of inventory corrections and stronger seasonality in the second half of the year. However, full-year 2023 shipments will be lower than in 2022 as consumers relegate PC spending behind other categories in a post-pandemic environment, said Kieren Jessop, research analyst at Canalys.

Lenovo remained the global PC market leader, but suffered a sharp drop in shipments of 18% from the previous year, falling to 14.2 million units. HP, which occupies the second place in the ranking, had a good quarter, thanks to the good health of Chromebook sales in the United States. The company recorded a stable performance by shipping 13.4 million units globally. Dell retained third place but lost more than two points of market share as shipments fell 22%. Apple saw the strongest growth among major vendors in Q2 2023, with shipments up 51% from the prior year. Although it was boosted by the launch of the new 15-inch Macbook Air, its strong performance was mainly due to a favorable comparison quarter due to the supply chain disruption it faced last year. Acer took fifth place in the ranking, with shipments of just under four million units.
