“Global Markets React to US Fiscal Crisis Vote: Stock Indexes and Oil Prices Updates”

MARKET REVIEWS. Global markets were down Wednesday morning as investors awaited a vote by the US Congress on the deal that might avert a fiscal crisis.

Stock indices at 7:51 a.m.

London slipped 0.1% at the start of the session in Europe. Frankfurt lost 0.3% and Paris 0.4%.

In New York, before the markets open, the average Dow Jones of industrial stocks and the broader index S&P 500 were down 0.2%.

In Asia, the Nikkei 225 plunged 1.4% in Tokyo. The Shanghai Stock Exchange lost 0.6% and the Hang Seng collapsed 1.9% in Hong Kong. Sydney lost 1.6% and Seoul fell 0.3%.

On the New York Commodity Exchange, the price of oil added 36 US cents to US$69.10 a barrel.
