The Association SOS Jeunesses et Défis invited actors from civil society organizations (CSOs), departments of the Ministry of Health and Technical and Financial Partners (PTF) to launch the project to “strengthen the significant commitment of youth and CSOs in the Global Financing Facility (GFF) process. Burkina Faso joined the GFF or Global Health Financing Mechanism in September 2017. This global health financing mechanism aims to end preventable deaths of mothers, newborns, children and adolescents and improve their health and quality of life. Indeed, according to GFF Liaison Officer, Nadine Tamboura, this vision is at the heart of the “Every Woman, Every Child” movement. It aims to strengthen the leadership and commitment of countries in the mobilization of domestic resources for the financing of reproductive, maternal, neonatal, child and adolescent health and nutrition.
“Insufficient coordination, collaboration and accountability at the different levels of the health system do not promote the improvement of the quality of people-centred care and patient safety”, she confided. However, she affirmed that in view of these shortcomings, civil society actors have mobilized to facilitate the popularization and appropriation of documents and texts with a view to the meaningful participation of young people and CSOs in the process. The GFF Liaison Officer also pointed out that the project to “strengthen the meaningful engagement of young people and CSOs in the GFF process in Burkina Faso” aims to contribute to the implementation, monitoring and the accountability of Burkina Faso’s investment case by the end of 2023. Specifically, the project intends, among other things, to strengthen the commitment and leadership of young people and CSOs around concerted actions for the GFF, in the implementation of the investment case. Ms. Tamboura said the GFF process helps country authorities and their partners set priorities, focus on results, and address key systemic bottlenecks to deliver the big results that are essential to the establishment of universal health coverage.
Youth involvement in advocacy
“This is a capacity building project, in particular for the action of non-governmental organizations so that they can participate more actively in the GFF process and make their voices heard”, she suggested. This initiative, to which Burkina adhered, made it possible to have additional resources to finance actions in the field of mother and child health. “At the end of this project, we are expecting implications, in the implementation of the investment case for the health of the mother of the newborn, in the follow-up of the implementation of the evaluation, and also the advocacy for mobilize more resources,” said GFF Liaison Officer, Nadine Tamboura.
The amount of this project financed by the GFF is 500,000 dollars or approximately 300 million CFA francs. As part of the implementation of the project, several activities will be carried out. For the executive director of SOS Jeunesse et Défis, Harouna Ouédraogo, beneficiary of the project, it is the establishment of a platform of CSOs on the process of the global health financing mechanism in Burkina Faso. He also confided that following the implementation of the project, there will be consultation frameworks for ownership of the various GFF processes. “We are really delighted, because this funding will help strengthen the commitment of young people and CSOs in the field of reproductive health, nutrition,” he said.
