According to figures from the World Health Organization (WHO), there have been 581 deaths from mpox (formerly called monkeypox) in the Democratic Republic of Congo this year. The country has also recorded nearly 12,000 cases of infections due to this virus, making it the largest epidemic the country has ever experienced.
“The risk of spread (…) seems significant”
The current toll greatly exceeds that of the 112 deaths recorded by Mpox last summer during its spread in several of Europe. This Saturday, November 25, experts warned of the probability of a larger epidemic of the disease due to its mutation making it very contagious and therefore improving its spread between humans, which was not the case previously.

“The risk of Mpox spreading to neighboring countries and throughout the world appears significant,” says the WHO. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the State is fighting against the spread of the virus, despite everything it has been detected in around 85% of the country. Currently, the death rate from the virus stands at 4.6%.

The most common symptoms of this virus are a rash or sores, accompanied by fever, headache, muscle pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes. Symptoms that generally last between 2 and 4 weeks.
