At the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, an agreement was reached for the first time that “we must move away from fossil fuels,” which are the main culprit of greenhouse gas emissions.
A ‘phased withdrawal’ agreement was also expected, but it was canceled due to opposition from major oil producing countries and some developing countries.

At the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, a joint agreement on ‘transition away from fossil fuels’ was announced.
‘We must accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels in the energy system by 2030.’
This is the first time in 28 years since the first general meeting in 1995 that member states have agreed on a joint move to move away from fossil fuels.

“It’s a plan driven by science. It is a balanced plan that addresses emissions, closes the gap on adaptation, reimagines global finance and delivers on losses.″
As differences of opinion among member countries regarding the draft agreement grew, discussions were extended for another day.
Initially, it was expected that the agreement would include “phasing out fossil fuels,” but instead, the draft came out saying “consumption and production can be reduced.”
The United States and the European Union criticized the level as insufficient to implement the Paris Agreement on climate change, which aims to keep the increase in global average temperature within 1.5 degrees.
It appears that an “exit” agreement has not been reached due to strong opposition from major oil producing countries such as Saudi Arabia and Russia, which are highly dependent on oil sales revenue, and some developing countries in Asia.

″A big problem is that the specific target amount or purpose of the fund has not yet been specified.″
The agreement also includes tripling renewable energy production by 2030, quickly retiring coal-fired power plants, and limiting new permits.
