What exactly is a glioblastoma?

A glioblastoma is a malignant brain tumor. It can arise in the frontal and temporal lobes (forehead and temples) and even in the spinal cord. Glioblastoma develops from glial cells, the supporting tissue of the brain.

Glioblastoma is considered to be particularly aggressive; rapid cell division leads to very rapid growth.

Men are affected regarding twice as often as women. People between the ages of 55 and 65 usually become ill – but the tumor can also appear earlier. Around 4,700 people become ill every year.

The first signs of intracranial pressure can be headache, dizziness and vomiting, but also visual and speech problems. Those affected also often experience slight irritability and disorientation.

Risky operation

The tumor is detected using MRI or CT. It is not curable. He is treated with chemotherapy and radiation. Glioblastoma surgery is delicate. Possible risks include limited speech, one-sided paralysis, personality changes and memory impairments.

Only 5 to 10 percent of those affected survive the first five years.

Johannes Honsell was nominated for the Grimme Prize for his film “Living and Dying Check” with Tobias Krell in the leading role and received several awards.

The director leaves behind his wife and their son.
