Glider crash in Lower Austria: pilot (57) dead

A 57-year-old Viennese man died, the Lower Austria State Police Department announced on Monday. The aircraft crashed into a densely wooded area for unknown reasons. The pilot died at the scene of the accident.

The 57-year-old took off from the West airfield in Wiener Neustadt on Sunday morning. At around 5:45 p.m., Austro Control notified the flight operations center of a missing glider pilot. During a search by the police, Alpine police and the Interior Ministry’s aviation operations center, the missing aircraft was located and found by the crew of a helicopter at around 12:30 a.m. on Monday in the Saurüssel am Gahns area, Bürg-Vöstenhof municipality.
