His life as a politician

After a difficult childhood, Jackson acknowledged in her day that she decided to pursue acting following her school failure, which left her with no other option than to start working at the age of 16.

Despite her success in her acting career, which saw her play Queen Elizabeth I in a BBC miniseries, Jackson gave up acting to go into politics.

In 1992 she was elected Member of Parliament for the London constituency of Hampstead & Highgate and came to serve as Head of Transport between 1997 and 1999, under the first term of former Prime Minister Tony Blair (in power between 1997 and 2007).

Jackson had just finished filming “The Great Escaper” alongside Michael Caine, whom he last starred with 48 years ago in “The Romantic Englishwoman.”

His new film tells the story, inspired by true events, of a World War II veteran who escaped from his nursing home in Hove, East Sussex (south-east England), to attend a commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the landing in France.
