Glasenbachklamm: Municipality blocks popular hiking trail – bridges are no longer safe

The municipality of Elsbethen has completed its voluntary maintenance of the paths in the Glasenbach Gorge, which is popular with day trippers. Background: All bridges are said to be in need of renovation, but no agreement has been reached with the landowners.

According to Mayor Franz Tiefenbacher, the starting point for the debate and the decision in the municipal board on May 10th was a rescue operation on April 16th. At that time, emergency services had to rescue a woman from Salzburg and her dog from the gorge.

What nobody knew at the time: according to the Elsbethener building authority, bridge number 4, which was used by the rescue services for this operation, is no longer passable. Tiefenbacher’s letter goes on to say: “Furthermore, it can be stated that the municipal building yard and all service providers commissioned by the municipality were demonstrably advised not to drive on this bridge anymore.”

As a result, the municipality commissioned a civil engineer to carry out an on-site inspection not only of bridge number four. This took place on April 27th and came to the following conclusion: “The safe use of the bridges (particularly bridges 3 and 4) is no longer guaranteed for both pedestrian and vehicle traffic.”

And the further consequence: For this reason, the mayor closed the Glasenbachklamm on the same day. And the whole way.

The municipality justifies the withdrawal from the maintenance of the path as follows: “In the past, the municipality of Elsbethen took care of the maintenance of the path through the Glasenbachklamm voluntarily and without any legal obligation. A legal binding of maintenance obligations concerning this path has never taken place. For more than For two years, the community has been trying to get the landowners to rehabilitate the bridges along the way in cooperation with the affected landowners. No agreement might be reached.”

In addition, the “bridge no. 3 and 4 can no longer be walked on and driven on. The municipality of Elsbethen therefore announces that it will no longer take care of the maintenance of the path from May 11th, 2023 and points out that it will therefore also no road maintenance liability according to § 139a ABGB applies.”
