Something that rises almost meteorically from what feels like nothingness awakens expectations: dazzling sunshine The band from Salzburg were an absolute success with their first two albums, deftly playing with the boundaries of post-metal and creating their own, monumental sonic universe in a very short time. It took a little longer this time, but the wait definitely paid off. Partly recorded by spicy stink legend Martin Shirenc and mixed and mastered by Earth Ship mastermind Jan Oberg, you can “arrive” Actually keeping your standards high without treading water.
There’s a lot of tinkering and tinkering, especially in terms of dynamics, which tracks like “äon” highlight impressively. Although it takes a while to get going, this quiet, ominous structure is already mesmerizing. The discreet use of strings again and again throughout this recording emphasizes the quintet’s musical drama. The verses also feature a catchy, clear voice that you’d expect in the realm of seafaring apocalypse. The sheer ugliness of the emotional climax and similarly thrilling notes in the uncompromising underbelly round out the action.
This opaque, diverse but never arbitrary bastion is increasingly asserting itself. For example, “Starting for Spring” is also very fragile and almost unnoticeable at the beginning, and then the painful scream triggers a strong cold shiver, which makes your nerves strained to the limit… before bringing about the next turning point. Opening “Colossus” is also powerful for its bastion of doom, between icy whispers and dangerous attacks – The Sun’s Glare is at its best. The two bonus tracks missing from the vinyl subtly expand on the overall artwork, with the final “Horizon” swaggering between rage and brass, slapping the hair on the back of your neck.
Strong sounds, strong new ideas, plus strong guests (JJ from Harakiri For The Sky / Karg and Maffi from Collapse 7) – the overall package is once again on point. “TAL” sets sophisticated, fresh accents without completely abandoning previous work, and tackles its task brilliantly as usual. Glare Of The Sun are absolute masters of their craft, using post, doom, stare and darkness in an interesting way that elicits real emotion and allows each song to mature into a small work of art. For nearly an hour, you immerse yourself in a desolate yet alluring world that’s exhausting but one you don’t want to miss at any time. The third album is also an absolute masterpiece.
