It took a while, but it was worth the wait: Than giver When Sculpture of Violence was released in early February 2020, the world was on the threshold of dramatic change. This time, the German quintet did not escape unscathed. They also worked on their sound, making it more brutal and subtle. Metal and ambient sounds are still deeply rooted in hardcore music and now play a more prominent role. And then there’s this anger and this urge to change “There will be only confrontation in the future” drive.
Opening “Love Won’t Heal” emphasizes in every way that a completely different wind is blowing here. In addition to the subtly depressing title that also conveys an optimistic mood, the beautiful melody at the beginning is also captivating. The roller soon collapsed with a high-pitched scream more common in metal extremes. The riveting moments keep moving forward, with clear vocals, post-punk aesthetics and a post-metal sound world before Eye of the Storm explodes in the climax. “Future” follows closely behind, opening the crowbar, approaching blackened hardcore, and it couldn’t be more original. The middle is once again mixed with dark punk, which fits the song perfectly.
Unorthodox and unpredictable, that became the mantra of this record. So Paradise took the bold step and fell into the house with the proverbial door. Sudden alienation and one of the best vocal melodies on the entire album set the tone for a complex and welcomely balanced performance before perfect post-black metal rattles through. “Keep You Alive” even creates a bit of a Gothic atmosphere through the slogan, which is reminiscent of the disaster of neoliberalism, and finally escalates in slow motion. This shouldn’t actually work. “Gravity Pull” then breaks the six-minute mark, cutting through the post-rock buildup and turning the wheels with spontaneous, crisp bursts.
Maybe calling it a new beginning is a stretch, but The Giver manages to shake it off well. Sometimes you think you’re listening to a different band, which is definitely a compliment. The Future But Confrontation uncompromisingly expands musical horizons. You’ve never heard a quintet this hard and rough before, while dark melodies, post-punk aesthetics, gothic and alternative underline the necessary, ideal intensity. The risk the giver took has now paid off in spades – something happened.
