Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today made a fresh call for strengthening Ukrainian air defenses and urgent arms deliveries following the latest Russian strike today on Ukraine’s energy sector.
Zelensky said Ukraine needs a sufficient number of air defense systems and other weapons to protect its cities and prevail on the front lines.
“Terrorism must always be defeated and anyone who helps us stand up to Russian terrorism is a true pro-lifer,” he said.
Russia launched a “massive attack” on energy infrastructure in three Ukrainian provinces overnight, injuring at least two people, the Ukrainian military and local authorities said.
“During the night the Russian occupiers launched a new massive offensive once morest Ukraine using cruise missiles of various types,” the military said.
A total of 34 missiles were fired, of which 21 were shot down, the Ukrainian Air Force said.
An 82-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man were injured, the first in an artillery shelling on the city of Nikopol and the second by a Russian strike on an energy infrastructure in the neighboring city of Kryovorizka, the Chairman of the Kryvyi Defense Council Rich Oleksandr Vilkul told Telegram.
Power company DTEK said four of its thermoelectric plants were “severely damaged” by the “massive” overnight strikes.
“Unfortunately we might not avoid the consequences. Energy infrastructures in the cities of Dnipropetrovsk and Kriviy Rikh have been damaged, fires have broken out,” said the governor of Dnipropetrovsk region, Serhiy Lysak.
