Belizean fishermen and a biologist stumbled upon a mysterious, ancient-looking, blue-eyed shark in tropical Caribbean waters in late April. Researchers have only recently succeeded installthat the unusual individual was a Greenland shark or its hybrid from the polar shark family, which was first encountered in Caribbean waters.
The crew of the vessel, who discovered the unusual shark, immediately realized that they had managed to catch something out of the ordinary that they had not seen in all their fishing time, which the biologist, who was also part of the team, agreed with. The estimated length of the shark was up to 3.5 meters, but the mysterious specimen was released before it might be fully identified.
It is noted that polar sharks tend to live in the deepest and coldest waters of the oceans, while for Greenland polar sharks, the habitat is the Arctic Ocean or the North Atlantic. A new discovery by scientists may indicate that these sharks are much more common than previously thought.
