GIRONA have officially signed defensive midfielder Oriol Romeu on loan from fellow La Liga club Barcelona.
“FC Barcelona and Girona FC have reached an agreement for the loan of Oriol Romeu until 30 June 2025,” Barcelona said in an official statement, Tuesday (6/8).
Romeu arrived at Barcelona in the summer transfer window on a contract until 2027, having arrived from Girona after an impressive 2022/23 campaign.
The Catalan midfielder was immediately included in the team’s first team squad and played an important role at the start of the season as a defensive midfielder in the team.
However, as the season progressed, Romeu appeared less for El Barca because most of his time was spent struggling with a knee injury.
In total, in the 2023/24 season, the Spanish player made 37 appearances, 17 as a starter for Barcelona.

Romeu is not part of Barcelona’s new coaching scheme, with Hansi Flick preferring to field young players who have been trained by La Masia throughout Barcelona’s pre-season tour.
With Romeu’s departure, Barcelona, in this summer’s transfer market, has released a total of seven players, including Sergi Roberto and Marcos Alonso who did not get contract extensions.
Then Marc Guiu who was released to Chelsea, Chadi Riad who went to Real Betis, Estanis Pedrola who was sold to Sampdoria, and Sergino Dest who decided to join PSV Eindhoven on a free transfer. (Ant/Z-1)
