Giro d’Italia live in the ticker: Queen’s stage over three mountains – battle for the pink jersey on Mortitolo on the 16th stage

The 16th stage of the Giro starts at Lake Garda: from the start in Salo, the field makes its way north over 202 kilometers to the finish in Aprica.

After 30 kilometers of rather flat driving, the terrain rises, the first mountain classification is then following 60 kilometers. the dreaded climb to Mortirolo then starts in the middle of the stage, the pass summit is reached following 129 kilometers.

Before the final ascent, there is still an additional ramp to complete for the second intermediate sprint – in other races that would almost be a category 2 mountain classification.

The descent is over, the leading group around Kämna is now eating. Keldermann is 1:14 minutes behind following a defect, the field is now 2:41 minutes behind.

phew! Mattia Bais narrowly saved himself from a nasty fall, the Italian from Team Drone Hopper misjudged a corner, but was able to defuse the situation with an emergency brake, so that he only fell slightly and was able to quickly get back on his bike.

The leading group with its 22 riders around Lennard Kämna i and Wilco Keldermann from the Bora racing team is in the middle of the first of the three difficult climbs of the day. The field is a minute behind, led by Team Ineos around leader Ricjard Carapaz in the pink jersey.

16th Giro stage: The favorites

The top five drivers in the overall standings are only separated by a minute. But today’s stage is so difficult that the gaps can increase by minutes. To make matters worse, the king’s stage is held directly following a rest day and rain showers can occur during the course of the day. Overall leader Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) is going into the race as a big favourite. But Jai Hindley (Bora) has done well so far. It remains to be seen how well Mikel Landa (Bahrain) gets into climbing form in week three.

With 5250 meters in altitude over 202 kilometers, this is the king’s stage of this Giro. After the start in Aprica there are almost 30 flat kilometers before the Goletto di Cadino (1st category: 19.9 kilometers; 6.2%) opens the climbing. After a short passage through the valley, the first sprint takes place in Edolo following 112 kilometers.

This is the starting point for the dreaded Passo di Mortirolo, which this time is tackled from the somewhat easier east side (1st category: 12.6 kilometers; 7.6%). After another passage through the valley, there is a short climb for the second intermediate sprint in Teglio (5.6 kilometers; 8.2%). After a short intermediate descent, the decisive ascent to Valico di Santa Cristina (1st category: 13.5 kilometers; 8%) takes place. From the summit it is only six kilometers to the finish in Aprica.
