“Giro d’Italia: Latest Results and Updates on Bruno Armirail’s Reign as Maglia Rosa Leader”

2023-05-21 17:24:00

The Frenchman Bruno Armirail, who conquered the maglia rosa on Saturday, remains the leader following two Giro weeks, even if he lost 33 seconds of his lead over the big favorites in the demanding final up to the old town of Bergamo in the day’s result. He is now 1:08 ahead of second-placed Geraint Thomas.
Lennard Kämna also lost contact with the top riders at the end, but almost caught up once more on the home stretch: the small groups separated there by only two seconds and so the Bora captain remains seventh in the overall standings (+3:02).

UPDATE 13/05/2023 AT 2:59 PM

With no German riders, the day’s break made off shortly following the start of the 195km, well before the first of the day’s four climbs. The field quickly let the 14 riders do their thing, giving them a lead of up to eight minutes without endangering the Armirail (Groupama) pink jersey.

Healy (Team EF) and Einer Rubio (Movistar) duel intensively for the mountain ratings of the day, which improved them to second and fourth place in the climbing classification. On the last long climb of the day, Healy and McNulty (UAE) broke away from their escape companions, before Italian Frigo from the Israel racing team caught up and the trio dueled for victory in the final kilometers in Bergamo.

As the best-placed of the escapees, Rubio made up several minutes in the overall standings, the Colombian is now in 14th place (+5:29).

For McNulty, the victory in Bergamo was the greatest success of his career, the 25-year-old from Phoenix was able to be at the top of a Grand Tour for the first time and denied Healy his second success in the 106th Giro d’Italia. “It’s indescribable,” he struggled for words at the finish, “that was my goal for the race, but I got sick on the first day – but today everything came together and I’m so happy!”

Giro: mountain arrival following rest day

On Monday, the drivers will enjoy the second and last rest day of the tour, before the extremely demanding final week begins on Tuesday with a difficult mountain stage on Lake Garda and the final ascent to Monte Bondone.
