Evenepoel loses ground in attacks: world champion shows weakness
UPDATE 13/05/2023 AT 2:59 PM
With no German riders, the day’s break made off shortly following the start of the 195km, well before the first of the day’s four climbs. The field quickly let the 14 riders do their thing, giving them a lead of up to eight minutes without endangering the Armirail (Groupama) pink jersey.
Healy (Team EF) and Einer Rubio (Movistar) duel intensively for the mountain ratings of the day, which improved them to second and fourth place in the climbing classification. On the last long climb of the day, Healy and McNulty (UAE) broke away from their escape companions, before Italian Frigo from the Israel racing team caught up and the trio dueled for victory in the final kilometers in Bergamo.
Three-way battle in the final act: McNulty strikes in Bergamo
As the best-placed of the escapees, Rubio made up several minutes in the overall standings, the Colombian is now in 14th place (+5:29).
For McNulty, the victory in Bergamo was the greatest success of his career, the 25-year-old from Phoenix was able to be at the top of a Grand Tour for the first time and denied Healy his second success in the 106th Giro d’Italia. “It’s indescribable,” he struggled for words at the finish, “that was my goal for the race, but I got sick on the first day – but today everything came together and I’m so happy!”
