The queen stage of this Giro did not give rise to a big fight in the group of favorites. It all came down to the last two kilometers when Roglic attacked before being countered by Thomas. The duo takes regarding twenty seconds from Almeida. But it was the Colombian Buitrago who won the victory at the top of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo ahead of the unlucky Gee who finished second for the fourth time in this Tour of Italy.

The breakaway took time to take shape but in the end there were 15 of them to take the right shot which quickly took a three-minute lead over the peloton.

Ben Healy tries to get out on the first climb of the day, the Passo Campolongo, to play his last card in the mountain classification but Thibaut Pinot slips into its wheel each time and the INEOS Grenadiers team rolls to catch up with the two men, not wanting to let the Frenchman, 7th overall, go.

The group of 15 loses elements over the kilometers while the gap stabilizes around 8 minutes. Verona et Gee accelerate in the leading group in the Passo Giau, third climb of the day. They are finally five in the leading group since buitrago, Cort et Hepburn join them. But on the descent, men come back from behind and they are once more 11 in the lead.

Warbasse go out in the Passo Tre Croci and dig a small hole. Buitrago, Cort and Gee made the effort a little further to pick up on the leading trio. Warbasse must let go but is replaced numerically by Hepburn which connects. In the small descent before the last climb, the leading group is reformed once more and is made up of 11 riders.

But it doesn’t last long, Hepburn accelerates and is joined by Buitrago. The indestructible Gee and Cort came back to the leading duo and the Canadian even took off alone at the foot of the final climb towards Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Buitrago hangs on for a few seconds and catches Gee 1.5km from the finish before dropping him off directly.

In the group of favourites, the fight only broke out 2km from the finish when Roglic place an attack but Thomas et Almeida respond present. Arensman et Caruso also come back.

Santiago Buitrago did not crack and won alone on the queen stage of this Giro at the top of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Derek Gee finishes 2nd for the 4th time in this Giro. In the group of favorites, Thomas accelerates 300m from the line and Roglic manages to jump into the wheel of the Briton before passing him on the line and taking three seconds from him. Almeida stuck like the day before and lost regarding twenty seconds.
