Alberto Dainese (DSM) brought Italy their first success at the Giro 2022. He won in the sprint at the end of the 11th stage in Reggio Emilia ahead of the Colombian Fernando Gaviria.
At the cost of a breathtaking finish, Dainese (24) was able to overtake Gaviria in the final meters to celebrate a nice victory, his first in a grand tour.
There have been no major changes in the general standings where Spaniard Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek) remains in the pink jersey. The Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz however pocketed three bonus seconds in an intermediate sprint. He goes back to third place, tied for time with the Portuguese Joao Almeida, 12 seconds behind Lopez.
De Bondt resumed shortly before the red flame
Contested in the heat, this 203 km stage starting from Santarcangelo di Romagna did not present any notable difficulty and seemed destined for the sprinters. The Belgian Dries De Bondt tried his luck alone 60 km from the finish, but he was caught shortly before the red flame.
Thursday, the 12th stage will be the longest of this Giro. It will cross the chain of the Apennines from Parma to Genoa, over 204 kilometres. The course has three listed climbs favorable to adventurers despite the relatively flat last 30 kilometers.
