DODEA-Europe Ushers in‌ Era of Girls Wrestling

For Athena Quiroz, a sophomore at Rota High School, the upcoming DODEA-Europe ‌girls wrestling championships mark a ‌historic moment. Though she won’t be traveling to Bakersfield, California, this year like⁣ she did with her father,⁤ Jose, to watch the CIF state wrestling championships, the feeling will be remarkably similar.

Quiroz will be among the ⁤71 girls competing in eight weight ⁢classes during the inaugural DODEA-Europe girls ⁢wrestling championships, taking place from Thursday to Saturday at the Wiesbaden Sports and Fitness Center in Germany.

“It wouldn’t say it’s exactly the same, but it’s almost the same concept,” Quiroz said. “It gives you that same kind of ⁣excitement that I got ⁢when I was younger‍ going‌ to these state tournaments and going to watch people I idolize a lot.”

A New Era‍ for Girls Wrestling in Europe

Quiroz’s arrival in Europe coincides ⁣with a significant growth ⁤for girls wrestling. This season marks the first⁣ time that DODEA-Europe has ‍recognized girls wrestling as a separate sport, a move ‍that signifies⁢ a⁢ major shift after years of girls competing against boys.⁢

While girls consistently qualified for‍ the European championships in the past, they haven’t had the opportunity to compete for a dedicated championship title. This year, that changes.

The ⁤DODEA-Europe championships ‍will showcase‌ the growing talent and dedication of female wrestlers across‌ the continent. These athletes⁣ are pioneers, paving the way⁣ for future generations of girls who aspire to compete in this dynamic sport.

With stringent training regimes, unwavering commitment, ‍and the support of fellow athletes and coaches, ⁢Quiroz and her fellow competitors are ⁣poised ⁢to make their mark⁤ on the inaugural DODEA-Europe girls wrestling championships.

This event ⁣is a testament to the growing popularity and recognition of girls wrestling,⁤ not onyl in Europe ‌but also ⁤worldwide. ⁢As ‍more opportunities become available for girls to participate in⁢ this⁣ exhilarating sport, we ‌can expect to see even more talented athletes emerge.

Girls Wrestling takes Center ⁣Stage in DODEA-Europe

A historic moment is unfolding in ⁢the world of ‌high school athletics in Europe. This year, for the first time ⁢ever, the Department of Defense Education Activity-Europe (DODEA-Europe) is hosting a girls wrestling championship, marking a significant milestone in the growing popularity of the sport among female athletes.

The inaugural tournament, set to take place this weekend, reflects⁢ a broader trend witnessed across the globe. In the United States alone, the number of female high school wrestlers has doubled between the 2021-2022 and 2023-2024 school years, with 45 states now recognizing girls wrestling as a varsity‍ sport. Last month, the NCAA further solidified this momentum by approving‍ women’s wrestling as it’s 91st⁤ championship‍ sport.

DODEA-Europe’s embrace ⁢of girls wrestling has ignited a wave of enthusiasm among⁣ young⁢ athletes.”It’s going to be an⁣ experiance⁤ I’ve‍ never did in my life,” said SHAPE freshman Sofia Colalongo, a 14-0 judo⁢ athlete from Italy, expressing the excitement of many newcomers to the sport.”It will be so emotional.”

This year’s⁣ tournament is notably special as it marks a paradigm shift from the past, where ⁣female wrestlers competed against ⁢boys. Quennette Kirkconnell, ⁢a senior from Rota High ‍School, provides a poignant example of this change. Having previously qualified for two⁤ European championships against boys, she recalls being one of only two ⁤girls ‌on⁤ her team. Now, the Admiral program boasts 15 girls, ⁤with all eight who competed at the South sectional meet advancing to the finals.

“I don’t⁣ want to psyche them out, especially as it can‍ be overwhelming, being the first girls⁤ division, first girls team to go out there,” said Kirkconnell, who has been sharing her experiences⁣ with her‌ teammates.“I’m very proud of them, ⁣and I don’t ‌want them to worry too much.”

Another standout ‌competitor is Rota High School’s Jazmine Quiroz, who has remained undefeated at 120 pounds this season. “It’s a little nerve-racking, since it’s going to be ⁤on a bigger stage, arena than it was the last couple of months,” Quiroz shared, expressing her eagerness to face new opponents, including Alconbury’s Richele Reyes, at the⁣ tournament.

The shift to girls-only competition allows ⁤wrestlers like Kirkconnell‍ to focus on technique rather than simply relying on strength. “I’m so proud to be here, to have it as first year‍ with girls ⁣wrestling/last year of me wrestling is a great way to …,” said Kirkconnell, underscoring the meaning of this newfound opportunity.

With the arrival of girls‍ wrestling in DODEA-Europe, a new era of athletic opportunity and empowerment has begun. This milestone paves the way for a brighter future for girls in sports, inspiring⁢ them to break barriers and pursue their athletic dreams.
