A girl was shot in the head in the southern United States by a man who “saw shadows” on his property while children were playing hide-and-seek, local police said.

The Calcasieu County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Tuesday that the incidents took place Sunday in Starks, a town in Louisiana near the border with Texas.

The police found a 14-year-old girl “suffering from a gunshot wound to the back of the head.” She was taken to hospital with “non-fatal injuries”.

Police said investigators learned that a number of youths were “playing hide-and-seek in the neighborhood and hiding on a neighbour’s property”.

In response to a question from investigators, David Doyle explained that “following he saw the shadows outside his house, he went to get his firearm” from inside the house.

The sheriff’s office said the 58-year-old “returned outside and noticed people running from his property, at which point he began shooting in their direction, unknowingly hitting the girl.”

The man was arrested and charged with several charges, including assault with a weapon, with aggravating reasons for the penalty.

This incident is part of a series of regular incidents that have turned into bloody tragedies in the United States.

In April, a 20-year-old woman was killed in upstate New York following she accidentally drove her car into the driveway of a private home.

In the same month, in Texas, a man opened fire on “Boom Boom Girls” cheerleaders, following one of them tried to open his car door following she thought it was her car. A black teenager was shot and seriously injured following walking into a home by mistake in Missouri.
