A 20-year-old girl in the UK plucked out her eyes with her hands to “get closer to God” and “save the world”.
In 2018, a young girl named Kelly Mathart got drunk and gouged out her own eyes because she believed it would save the world.
According to the British news outlet “Daily Star”, Kelly was diagnosed with bipolar disorder that year and suffered a mental breakdown after a heartbreaking breakup.
During this tumultuous time, she turned to drugs to soothe her emotions.
Speaking about the traumatic experience of self-harm, she said, ‘I was delusional, so my memories are fuzzy’.
‘I remember thinking that someone had to sacrifice something important to fix the world, and that person was me,’ Kelly said. I thought everything was going to end suddenly and if I didn’t pull out my eyes right away, everyone would die.’
Narrating the painful experience, he said, ‘I stuck my thumb, index finger and middle finger in the eye. I grabbed each eyeball, twisted, and pulled until both eyes popped out of the sockets’.
‘It felt like a huge struggle, the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do because I couldn’t see anymore, I didn’t know there was blood,’ Kelly said.
Kelly’s mother Katie Tompkins said in one of her posts, ‘I am so proud of her and thankful for her love for her and for God.’
Kelly is now 25 years old and after attending a school for the blind is now finishing her high school diploma with the goal of going into neurobiology.
‘Since I could see before, my brain is not accepting not seeing, it’s not dark when you’re blind,’ Kelly said.
Kelly underwent a life-changing procedure three years ago to receive a prosthetic eye designed to resemble her real eyes, much to the delight of her family and friends. .
