Julia Chávez, a 13-year-old girl, died 12 hours following being diagnosed with leukemia. The death took place in South Carolina, a state located in the United States, last Monday (13/2).
Julia’s father decided to take her to the hospital on Sunday following she complained of headaches and earache. Doctors believed it to be an infection and prescribed antibiotics. However, the next day, the young woman fainted and had to go back to the hospital.
There, she underwent blood tests that found the cancer. The teenager was suffering from bleeding in the brain, lungs and stomach caused by leukemia. She mightn’t resist and passed away hours following the diagnosis.
To the local newspaper The Augusta Chronicle, Julia’s father, Dennis Lee Chavez, said that her daughter used to have bruises occasionally. However, the family believed that the spots were the result of common incidents.
Leukemia is a type of cancer caused by the accumulation of white blood cells in the bone marrow. These cells undergo mutations and begin to multiply uncontrollably, replacing red blood cells and platelets, essential blood cells for the functioning of the body.
According to the Brazilian Association of Lymphoma and Leukemia (Abrale), the main symptoms of leukemia are:
- Anemia;
- Recurrent severe infections;
- Tiredness;
- Pallor;
- Lack of energy;
- Hematomas over the body;
- Gum bleeding.
