Prabowo’s Cabinet Shuffle: A Cultural Shift or Just a Shift in Chairs?
Jakarta has once again found itself in the swirling vortex of political announcements, with President Prabowo Subianto unveiling his newly minted cabinet. Now, if you’re wondering whether this is an exciting cultural renaissance or just another euphemism for “We’ve run out of ideas,” pull up a chair because we’re diving in.
On a balmy evening in Jakarta, on the 20th of October 2024, Prabowo stood tall (or as tall as one can stand while attempting to look stately) alongside his wingman, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, to announce that Giring Ganesha will now be serving as the Deputy Minister of Culture in the newly formed Red and White Cabinet 2024-2029. Ah yes, because if there’s one thing we needed, it’s more Giring in our lives! Who doesn’t want a splash of Giring to their morning coffee?
Now, you might be asking yourself, “Who is Giring Ganesha, and why does he sound like he should be running a trendy café?” Well, Giring isn’t just any name; he’s a member of the PSI Advisory Board and will be playing second fiddle to Fadli Zon, the Minister of Culture himself. Together, they will tackle the pressing issues of culture—or, as some mournfully call it, the ‘theater of the absurd’ that is government these days.
Prior to this grand announcement, the cabinet contenders were summoned to the State Palace, a lovely way to say, “We’ll feed you first, and then we’ll see if you’re cabinet material.” They filed in at precisely 19.15 WIB. If that doesn’t sound like the prep for a new episode of “Survivor,” I don’t know what does!
Now listen to this: Prabowo, the man of the hour, had his work cut out as he reportedly called over 100 potential ministers and deputy ministers. It’s like a casting call for the most ambitious reality show of political survival where the prize is governmental authority! After the names were thrown around, the candidates were whisked away to what is amusingly referred to as the “Hambalang Retreat.” Sounds spiritual, doesn’t it? Maybe they meditate on the finer points of bribery versus blackmail.
But it doesn’t end there! Following the cabinet inauguration—just a fancy term for “Let’s put on some suits and make it official”—the fresh recruits will be treated to a briefing at the Military Academy in Magelang, Central Java. Because nothing says “We’re here to lead” like a group of politicians attending boot camp together. Who knows, maybe they’ll learn how to march in sync while bickering over budget allocations.
In summary, will Prabowo’s cabinet be a veritable renaissance of culture, or are we merely witnessing the rearrangement of deck chairs on the Titanic? With Giring Ganesha now on board—leading our cultural ship—one can only hope he knows how to swim when the waves get a bit rocky.
