Giorgos Papapavlou: Letter to Mendoni for the DIPETHE of Patras

The bag of Aiolos opens at DIPETHE Patras after the strange process of selecting the new artistic director, the result of which, as is well known, was announced by “P” with its extensive publication, as early as… April 24, 2024!

As our newspaper reveals today, one of the candidates for the position of artistic director of DIPETHE Patras, is oriented to address the Minister of Culture, after the unprecedented refusal of the president of our local curtain, to accept the filing of an objection on his part, regarding the selection process.

At the same time, he leaves suspicions about the method of selection and the transparency of the process, while meaningfully noting that “the position of the artistic director in a DIPETHE is political. They should not make it partisan…”.

The well-known paternal actor Giorgos Papapavlou, speaking to “P”, reveals his intention to address Lina Mendoni, after the president’s refusal:

“In the e-mail I sent to the president of DIPETHE, asking her to inform me about the procedure provided for in case someone wants to file an objection, Mrs. Lydias Karathanasopoulou’s response was that there is no provision for such a thing! Is it possible? What does the Ministry of Culture respond to this? How is it possible for such a position that no objection is foreseen, at the same time that e.g. do the DIPETHE of Ioannina and Serres provide for it? Do board members make decisions without being audited? Is this a democracy? Is this a… pro-people practice?”.

IT IS NOT LEGAL

As for the selection process, Giorgos Papapavlou notes:

“We didn’t know how the selection was made. I don’t know how they decided. It was a blurry landscape! It is not legal to not be able to testify. It is unacceptable for such a position. There must be transparency.

I had an interview on June 10th. I interviewed 4 of the 9 members of the board of directors, because the other members… were absent! They had to see 17 candidates. Why did they accept their position on the board if they could not live up to their duties? It’s a shame that our city and DIPETHE are honored by such remarkable artists and ignored in this way…”.

PRE-DETERMINED CHOICE

At the same time, Mr. Papapavlou, although he clarifies that he does not question the qualifications and value of the chosen Yiannis Kalatzopoulos,
raises questions about the very process of selecting the artistic director, leaving suspicions of a predetermined choice:

“The announcement came out on April 1. The new artistic director was announced July 19. And I’m thinking… the basics: Someone who knows how to run a theater knows that if you give the seat at the end of July, the first season is gone. And this shouldn’t happen when the DIPETHE has been headless for more than a year! Unless one knew in advance that he would be selected and take office, in which case he had prepared in advance…”.

PARIAS OWNED IT

At the same time, the actor and candidate artistic director breaks out for the image of the municipal curtain, criticizing the choices of the municipal authority:

“I feel distressed as a Patron, to see the situation in which the DIPETHE of Patras has fallen in recent years. From a protagonist he became a pariah in the theater. It’s nowhere on the artistic map. And this situation is due to the wrong choices made at the leadership level…”.
