Giorgia Meloni calls on the international community to “raise its voice” on the situation in Venezuela

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has urged the international community not to remain “impassive” in the face of the situation in Venezuela, where “brutal repression” is taking place, and urged it to “raise its voice” in her speech to the United Nations General Assembly.

“In Latin America, as is unfortunately the case in many regions of the world, the legitimate aspirations of tens of millions of people for freedom and democracy remain unfulfilled. I am thinking in particular of the Venezuelan people, to whom we extend all our solidarity and support,” he said in his speech.

He therefore considered that “the international community cannot remain passive while, almost two months after the elections of 28 July, the electoral result is still not recognised.”

“And meanwhile, there is brutal repression, the death of dozens of protesters, the arbitrary detention of thousands of political opponents, the indictment and exile of the democratic opposition presidential candidate. It is our duty to speak out,” he stressed.

The need

In his speech before the UN General Assembly, Meloni also referred to the need to “strengthen cooperation” with Latin America to “defeat the slavers of the Third Millennium,” alluding to the fight against organized crime in the area of combating human trafficking and drug trafficking, among others.

“We can do this by joining forces, with greater cooperation and joint initiatives between our police forces, intelligence services and judicial authorities, adopting the ‘follow the money’ formula.

It is the brainchild of two great Italian judges, Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, which has become a model, also at international level, for fighting criminal organisations.

Intention

“It is a method with which Italy also intends to strengthen its cooperation with Latin American nations,” added the far-right leader, alluding to the work of iconic anti-mafia judges Falcone and Borsellino, who were killed by the mafia in two brutal attacks in 1992.

According to Meloni, “there is a red thread that links organizations that speculate with human trafficking in Africa and those that direct drug trafficking in Latin America, or the abomination of those who kidnap children to turn them into sexual slaves of unscrupulous rich men, depriving them of their present and their future.”
