“Ginny & Georgia”: Is season 2 worth it?

Ginny & Georgia are back. The second season of the Netflix series continues the story of the mother-daughter team – and is more dramatic than ever.

A teenage daughter doesn’t get along with her mother – nothing new. Or? However, the relationship between Ginny (Antonia Gentry) and Georgia (Brianne Howey) in the Netflix series “Ginny & Georgia” is not quite so ordinary. First, there is the fact that Ginny is black while her mother is white. On the other hand, Georgia’s criminal past puts a strain on the relationship.

This is exactly where the second season that has just been released begins. The two protagonists try in their own way to deal with the problems that arose from their mother’s turbulent, restless youth. The focus of the new episodes is how both deal with the mental illness of their daughter and want to work through their relationship with each other. Other important storylines are Ginny’s relationship with Marcus and Georgia’s upcoming marriage to Mayor Paul. Georgia’s violent ex-boyfriend Gil also appears as an antagonist.

Flashbacks to Georgia’s past

At times, broaching the various issues that co-exist can be overwhelming to watch. However, it is precisely this complexity that shows impressively that each character fights his own battles. Stylistically, the series repeatedly implements flashbacks to Georgia’s past to better explain current circumstances. This will help give a better understanding of Georgia’s choices. At the same time, the story shows how maternal trauma can be transferred to children and the environment.

“Ginny & Georgia”: Also teenage themes

In addition to all the emotional depth, there are also themes in “Ginny & Georgia” that are quite typical for teen dramas: first love, friendship and arguments. And even if the series deals very explicitly with Georgia’s criminal past, the underlying dynamic can still be transferred to many family and human relationships.
