Haapsalu castle is waiting for sweet entries for the gingerbread castle competition again this year. Crafts can be brought to the castle’s cash desk until December 1. The gingerbread castles that have arrived will be put on display, and the jury will announce the winning entry on December 15.
The castle maker can make a fantasy castle that he likes – there are no restrictions on the gingerbread castle. While a gingerbread house usually has four walls and a roof, a castle is a more complex “structure” with walls, buildings and towers. “Making it takes longer, but seeing it at the exhibition is more exciting,” says Tiina Elvelt, the curator of Haapsalu Castle, and encourages adults, children and families to participate in the competition.
Last year, four gingerbread birds were brought to the competition, and the winner was Kaisa Úunas, whose work was liked by both the jury and the audience.
The competition is organized by Haapsalu castle together with Koogikiirab. Gingerbread castles can be viewed at Haapsalu Castle until January 6, 2025.
In addition to the competition, there are two gingerbread castle days for visitors in Haapsalu Castle in December: Saturday, December 7 and Sunday, December 15 from 12:00 to 14:00.
On the day of the gingerbread castle, adults and children alike can watch the exhibition of gingerbread castles, make a castle-shaped gingerbread with a gingerbread mold made from the copper sheet of the roof of the castle torn down by the storm, watch the miracle game “St. Nicholas”, during which they will learn how the custom of giving gifts at Christmas came about and casting in the blacksmith’s house as bad luck. The ticket is 12 euros, free for children under 4 years old. Tickets are on sale before the start at the castle box office.
