Venezuelan opposition lawmaker and former political prisoner Gilber Caro was arrested in Miami, South Florida (USA), after fleeing the scene of a traffic accident that left one person dead and another injured.
Caro, a member of the Voluntad Popular (VP) party of former interim president Juan Guaidó, was arrested on Monday and transferred to a Miami correctional facility after escaping on foot from a traffic accident that occurred after 3:30 a.m. local time (7:30 GMT) on Monday morning.
The incident occurred when the vehicle in which the person who died in the accident was traveling southbound ran a red light at an intersection in the southwest of the city, after which Caro, who was driving another car heading west, hit the victim’s car.
As a result of the impact, the car that ran the red light collided with a third vehicle and then with a palm tree. Its driver was declared dead at the scene by the firefighters who arrived to provide assistance.
Police report
According to the police report, Caro left the scene on foot without rendering aid to the victims. He was arrested a couple of hours later and booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Facility.
“We have been informed that Gilber Caro, former political prisoner and deputy elected in 2015, was involved in a traffic accident in the last few hours in the United States and is in the custody of authorities in that country after what happened,” the Voluntad Popular Party posted on its X account.
The group added that since these are “events in full development,” they are awaiting further information before announcing any new developments.
Gilber Caro lived in Miami after having been arrested up to three times by the regime of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
