Brazil reaches 3,500 gifted individuals identified by a global entity, with a thousand children and adolescents mapped

The Mensa Brasil Association, an entity that brings together people with high intellectual abilities in the country and official representative of Mensa Internacional, the main high IQ organization in the world, has just reached the milestone of 3.5 thousand Brazilians with giftedness/high abilities identified in the national territory , also called “superintelligent”, including exactly one thousand “gifted” children and adolescents mapped.

According to data from the Mensa Brasil Association, official representative of Mensa International, the main high IQ organization in the world, of the total identified in the country, more than 25% are children and adolescents

According to the entity’s mapping, of the total number of people identified in Brazil, the state of São Paulo leads the ranking, with 1552 super intelligent people. Next are Rio de Janeiro, with 376 people, Minas Gerais, with 284, Paraná, with 268, and Distrito Federal, with 211 (see complete ranking below).

Of the total number of superintelligent people identified by the entity in Brazil, more than 25% are minors, totaling a thousand children and adolescents. The first child joined the entity in September 2006, when he was 9 years old. The youngest currently identified by Mensa Brasil are 2 and 3 years old.

Expand the spectrum of gifted identification – Brilliant minds

In order to expand the discovery of people with giftedness/high abilities, the entity has periodically carried out rounds of tests in several Brazilian cities. He has also just launched a foundation in defense of the rights and guarantees of gifted people in the country.

This is the Mensa Brasil Foundation, which appears with the purpose of expanding the public debate on the role and development potential of the country through more initiatives aimed at individuals with giftedness/high abilities. The entity also intends to promote “super intelligent” people for the benefit of society with the development of educational, social assistance, defense and guarantee of rights, cultural and research promotion activities.

Disparity in opportunities

According to the president of the Mensa Brasil Association, Carlos Eduardo Fonseca, the topic of high cognitive abilities is of paramount importance for the country’s development. “Identifying people with high intelligence is a fundamental tool to help Brazil develop public policies for giftedness and high abilities , which today do not reach the population to be served. If up to 11% of the population is gifted and less than 27,000 have access to school education, for example, it means that Brazil fails to identify them,” he explains.

“Bringing this problem to public debate is essential to achieving full compliance with the rights of individuals with high potential. Mensa plays a fundamental role in this work, in the sense of contributing to identification processes and providing environments that help in the development of the potential of gifted individuals”, observes the entity’s president.

Mensa Brasil recommends that Brazilian governments adopt a structured national system for assessing the intelligence of children enrolled in early childhood and elementary education, both in public and private educational institutions. This measure is already applied in several countries, with important and positive results.

In the entity’s view, this model would serve as a basis for the broad identification of so-called super intelligent people, even in the first years of schooling, contributing to better targeting, development and use of intellectual potential in Brazil, contributing to the evolution of these individuals and benefiting society Brazilian.
