Gift Giving Guidelines for Garbage Collectors and Other Service Workers: Know Your Rights and Spotting Scams

2023-12-11 07:37:00

You may have received this little note from the garbage collectors in your mailbox: they are offering to give them the famous end-of-year gifts, a little something to thank them for their work.

Only, who can really ask you for gifts? Garbage collectors, in the first place, indeed, if their waste intermunicipal authority authorizes it.

For example, in the province of Namur, workers are authorized to go door-to-door between November 15 and January 15, every day (except Sunday) and until 6:30 p.m.

In the Mons region, teams can come to your home until January 4. In the province of Luxembourg, however, it is forbidden to go door-to-door and in Walloon Brabant, there is no question of doing it during service hours.

Remember that you don’t have to give a small donation: your trash will be collected whatever happens.

And the others ?

If it’s the postman who comes to your door, there’s a problem: BPost strictly prohibits them from asking for gifts. Same for the police, they will not come door to door.

Finally, how to spot a scam?

In the province of Namur, intermunicipal agents have a collection authorization card. You can ask them to check!

In the Mons region, the agents distribute a small document at the same time, which lists the collection dates for 2024. The police also point out that the agents often appear in uniform, and therefore rarely in civilian clothes.
