Giant Steps Centre: inauguration of the first Autistic & Adult Space – Quebecor

The Autist & Major Foundation inaugurated Thursday the first Autist & Major – Quebecor Space, which is located in the new facilities of the Giant Steps Center, in the Shop Angus district, in Montreal.

The Espace Autiste & major – Quebecor is intended for the first year to support 36 autistic adults so that they can increase their autonomy, develop social skills as well as socio-professional skills, it was specified during the ceremony, in the presence of the founders of the Autist & Major Foundation, namely the president Sophie Prégent and the vice-president Charles Lafortune, as well as the president and chief executive officer of Quebecor, Pierre Karl Péladeau.

The program dedicated to autistic adults will be offered by the Giant Steps Centre, which houses the first Espace Autiste & major – Québecor. The goal, within three years, is to support up to 100 autistic adults.

The first Espace Autiste & major will be the “flagship” of a network that might include up to eight points of service across Quebec by 2027.

Sophie Prégent and Charles Lafortune, whose adult son, Mathis, has autism, said: “This project brings hope to adults with autism, who currently face significant obstacles due to the lack of services adapted to their reality. . By attending the new Espace Autiste & major – Québecor, they will be able to participate in stimulating, innovative activities and exploit their full potential. Other initiatives like this will also be born in the coming months and years, for the well-being of an entire community”.

$1 million donation from Quebecor

Remember that Quebecor donated $1 million to the Autist & Major Foundation, an amount that today makes it possible to create the first Espace Autiste & Major – Quebecor.

These people who have become adults, accompanied by specialized workers, will take part in development and training activities, like any neurotypical adult who, through their interests and aptitudes, makes their way on a personal and professional level!” underlined Pierre Karl Péladeau.

“I would like to thank Mr. Péladeau as well as Sophie and Charles for their dedication and generosity. It is, among other things, thanks to the mobilization of these leading partners that we can update our mission and develop services for people with autism aged 21 and over by offering them a wide range of specialized and very high quality services. under one roof,” said Giant Steps Center Executive Director Tania D’Alesio.

The Giant Steps Center, which has been in existence for 40 years, opened its doors on Tuesday in its new premises adapted to its clientele on Molson Street, in Montreal. The inauguration of the school is scheduled for September 14.
